KEES VAN DER WESTEN MIRAGE (DUETTE & TRIPLETTE)

The Kees van der Westen (KvdW) Mirage is an icon of professional espresso engineering. Utilizing a highly efficient thermo-syphon heat-exchanger (HX) system, it is designed for high-volume environments that demand consistent thermal mass, legendary durability, and the unmistakable aesthetic of Dutch design.

Thermal Engineering & Brewing

  • Thermo-Syphon System: A large copper steam boiler (13L for Duette, 19L for Triplette) acts as the primary heat source. Heat exchangers (450cc per group) run through this boiler to flash-heat water, while a continuous thermo-syphon loop circulates water between the HX and the group head.

  • Thermal Mass Stability: Each group features a 4 kg solid brass head, providing immense thermal inertia to ensure the water temperature remains stable even during the most demanding service shifts.

  • Precise Restrictors: Water temperature is managed via internal restrictors (standard 1.5mm). By controlling the flow rate within the thermo-syphon loop, baristas can fine-tune group temperatures for different roast profiles (e.g., lower temps for dark roasts, higher for light roasts) without altering the main boiler pressure.

  • Crossflow Cooling: The Mirage utilizes a sophisticated crossflow system where incoming cold water is pre-warmed by the outgoing hot water, ensuring efficient temperature regulation before the water reaches the brew head.

Technical Specifications

Model Steam Boiler Heating Power Phase Options
Mirage Duette 13 Liters 3,200W (Normal) / 4,800W (High) 1-Phase or 3-Phase
Mirage Triplette 19 Liters 6,000W 3-Phase
  • Tension/Frequency: 220–240 V | 50–60 Hz

  • Operating Pressure: 9 bar extraction (pump-assisted).

  • Safety: Integrated expansion valves (11–12 bar) and solenoid backup (15 bar).

Operational Philosophy

  • "Set it and forget it" Stability: Once the restrictors are set to your preference, the Mirage is built to pull dozens of shots back-to-back. The system recovers rapidly because it does not rely on electrical resistance heating at the group, but rather the constant, massive thermal reservoir of the main boiler.

  • The Workflow: The Mirage is designed for professional use. KvdW recommends a brief 30–45cc flush before pulling a shot to ensure the water in the group neck is at the perfect temperature. Because of the large thermal mass of the brass group, users should avoid long flushes, which can prematurely cool the system.

  • Industrial Longevity: Constructed with high-grade copper and brass, and featuring high-pressure rated solenoid valves, the Mirage is built to withstand the rigors of the busiest coffee bars in the world.
